MAAP went to Broken Hill in search of broken ground. A place to explore the limits of our bodies, and put to the test our latest collection of Alt_Road adventure cycling apparel and equipment. In the end, it became more a journey of the mind.

There’s the magic of Broken Hill being an iconic Hollywood filming locale, the red dust mingled with stardust. It’s also a strange and lonely place you would rarely, if ever, stumble upon. People who go there go with a purpose, and that felt alluring to us. And then there’s the landscape itself, the great vast expanses of nothing, punctuated with oases of ethereal unreality.

Out back, the mornings are bitterly cold and the days are searingly hot. It puts you to the test, physically and mentally, but how better to discover things about yourself? How better to flee from the fear of a mundane life than by, every now and then, putting yourself through something hard? Each of the riders in our crew experienced something about themselves on this ride, found personal spaces within while exploring the great big spaces around them.

The Land of the Drowning Trees has a strange history to match its mysterious nickname.  And to set eyes on it is stranger still. The Menindee Lakes are home to a dead forest of eucalyptus, rising defiantly through the crystalline surface of the water. To be here in such a disquieting place, perhaps the only one like it in the world, caps what is an undoubtedly unforgettable experience on the roads, tracks and trails of the down, Down Under.
