Prompt Midjourney for an image of Amsterdam and you’re sure to get something that looks like a bike, a bridge and a canal. Rolling into the physical world for a dose of something real, for our latest edition of Off The Front we went in search of a more human story with city native and OTF Volume #3 cover star Isa-Yasmijn Hinloopen.

And so it goes: The MAAP production team are on a shoot freezing their asses off in the middle of Norway as they hit a break in between a hectic day of filming. Isa is absolutely killing it as one of the riders being shot that day. Smashing up The Atlantic Road while keeping the crew engaged with some lewd anecdotes you just can't put in writing. A natural on the bike and in front of the camera, Isa isn't just a hitter on two wheels; she's successfully carving out a modelling and personal trainer career between London and Amsterdam. Infectious and fun, she's more than a laugh to be around. The conversation continues...

MAAP: "You're originally from Amsterdam? No way! We're opening a MAAP LaB there soon". Isa: "No shit! That's my home! Let me tell you about it sometime".

Two months later…

Amsterdam, it's your hometown. Tell us something you wouldn't get from Wikipedia or ChatGPT:

You can go and sit in your favourite cafe and see all your friends, not because you were supposed to meet them there, but just because it's so small and Dutchies are loyal to their favourites. My go-to coffee spot in Amsterdam, FUKU, is almost a forty-minute commute from my house, but I love to make my way there on a day off or when I'm going out for a ride.

Tell us about growing up in the city. It wasn't all picture postcard stuff?

We weren't dead poor, but my mom was a single parent with three children, dedicated to providing for us from the little money she had. It wasn't like that only in our household; growing up in the North side of Amsterdam in a big estate building, most of our neighbours' doors would be open to walk in and ask their kids to come and play. Basically, we were one big family, in the good and the ugly way.

How did you find your way to the bike?

It was when we were in full lockdown; my boyfriend at the time and I were exploring everything to do in and around the house. He is a cyclist and happened to have two bikes, just lying around the house, which I've now learned is completely normal for cyclists. I remember opening up a cabinet in the kitchen looking for certain kitchen appliances, and I would find spare tyres, bottles of chain lube or water bottles everywhere.

We would cycle to his parents, who live 40 km from Amsterdam, stay for dinner and cycle back home. I've always loved that about sports like cycling and running; it's so easy to combine it with other activities, and you can do it everywhere, so it almost never feels like a workout.

What’s been your best time on a bike?

There are many cycling experiences I'm very fond of; let's not forget I grew up in Amsterdam, where our number one way of commuting is and will always be the bike. I remember having divorced parents and two houses, cycling from my dad's house in the city centre to my school in the north. Leaving the house early in the morning, breathing in the fresh air of a brand new day, seeing the sun come up, making Amsterdam look like the city it seems like on all the postcards you'll find in the tourist shops. The bike would take me wherever I wanted to go, even if it was on the other side of the city. It would make me feel like I was in control; I could leave the house in a rush and play some hardcore music to make me pedal faster or take my time and sing along to some Amy Winehouse - the very best of times.

And what does your future hold? Where are you going next?

If I only knew the answer to this question, I can promise you I wouldn't be the woman I am today. Fuck it; I let life live me, knowing that I am always going to end up exactly where I need to be.

Finally, do you believe in aliens, and is this all just one big simulation?!

I honestly believe that if aliens exist, they're doing a bloody good job of not letting the humans ruin what they have.

Fuck it; I let life live me, knowing that I am always going to end up exactly where I need to be.
