We’re pumped to bring you the 2016 Ol’ Dirty jersey. The limited edition jersey has been created for Ol’ Dirty 2016, an event brought to you by MAAP & Hells 500.
2016 marks the second year that MAAP have been involved with Ol’ Dirty, and the first time we’ve been the title sponsor.
Ol’ Dirty is the brainchild of Hells 500, a riding group born in Melbourne most famous for creating the climbing challenge of Everesting.
“We are stoked to be partnering with MAAP again this year. We've been fans of this brand from day one, and it's our similar approach that means working together we can provide a truly memorable experience for our riders” - Andy van Bergen, founder of Hells 500.
It’s a 70km gravel/off-road ride that covers some amazing, rarely-used tracks and trails through a remote, beautiful, and highly grammable region around 90 minutes from Melbourne. Importantly, it’s not a race.
We asked Andy what makes Ol’ Dirty special “The appeal of this event is in how different it is - you won't find event timing or an energy gel stand here. Each year we set ourselves the target of getting our riders onto new roads, checking out new features, and delivering a new experience”.
As you might expect from the name there’s a strong tie-in to 90’s hip-hop culture, taking cultural cues from that scene in the use of gang signs as route markers, pre-ride barbershop cuts at the start line, and pumping beats never before heard amongst the trees of the Aussie bush.
There’s also a mid-ride surprise each year. In 2014 there was a pop-up cafe serving filter coffee, handmade hot dogs, and donuts, while 2015 saw a tailgate party, complete with a food truck slinging pulled pork and cornbread, washed down with an array of American beers and sodas.
Here at MAAP, we’re involved because we love the event. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a tough ride. Like everyone else, we roll around the course sharing laughs with mates.
So what’s going to make this years event even better? “I thought we had nailed the perfect course last year, but 2016 really takes the cake. A camera is essential, this route is rather picturesque. As always, we aim to surprise with the mid point feed - and this year we have kinda gone all out”.
